A thong is a type of bikini bottom which consists of a thin strip of fabric down the back designed to slip between the buttocks. While a number of people confuse these bottoms with g-strings, the latter is actually a type of thong with a string connecting the front and back triangles to the waistband. Other common types include the t-back and the v-string. A t-back does not have a triangular strip of fabric down the back. The front pouch is connected to the waistband by a single string, forming the letter “T” at the back. While a v-string does not have a triangular strip of fabric at the back as well, two strings connected to the front triangle are sewn side by side to make a scanty crotch. The strings are then separately connected to the waistband, forming a “V” (which actually looks more like a “Y”) behind.
